Fils de pasteur, brillant étudiant en botanique puis en médecine, Somerville Hastings exerce la chirurgie ORL dans divers établissements londoniens et visite régulièrement des cliniques spécialisées en France et en Suisse, ce qui lui permet de peaufiner ses compétences de laryngologue et d'assouvir sa passion informée pour la photographie de la flore. Entre 1906 et 1908, il publie trois volumes sur l'entretien domestique des fleurs sauvages, des plantes alpines et des champignons vénéneux (Toadstools at Home) avant de livrer ces subtiles Fleurs d'été des Hautes Alpes , une quarantaine de planches en couleurs réalisées dans l'Oberland bernois, minutieusement commentées et légendées en anglais, allemand et français. Cofondateur de la Socialist Medical Association, il est l'un des initiateurs du service public de santé britannique.

D'abord jardinier dans les jardins royaux de Windsor, John Gould est ensuite engagé par la Zoological Society of London où il reçoit en 1830 un lot d'oiseaux venus de l'Himalaya. S'entourant pour les textes du zoologue Nicholas Aylward Vigors (1785-1840) et confiant ses croquis à sa jeune épouse Elizabeth, talentueuse aquarelliste et lithographe parfois épaulée par l'illustrateur et poète Edward Lear (1812-1888), il publie à compte d'auteur Une centaine d'oiseaux des montagnes himalayennes. Le succès instantané l'encourage à multiplier les études qui aboutissent aux 5 volumes de Birds of Europe en 1837, année où cet amateur de colibris identifie les « pinsons de Darwin », passereaux rapportés du second voyage de Charles Darwin sur le Beagle.

Cet ouvrage présente les 143 plus belles pierres de la collection de minéraux que Roger Caillois a léguée au Muséum national d'histoire naturelle de Paris, ainsi que la réédition des célèbres textes Pierres, L'Écriture des pierres et Agates paradoxales. Homme de lettres et compagnon du mouvement surréaliste, Roger Caillois s'intéresse très tôt au monde minéral dont les formes évoquent pour lui des figures de l'imaginaire. Dès les années 1950, il commence à collectionner des minéraux du monde entier, des « pierres curieuses, qui attirent l'attention par quelque anomalie de leur forme ou par quelque bizarrerie significative de dessin ou de couleur ». Toutes possèdent « une ressemblance inattendue, improbable et pourtant naturelle, qui provoque la fascination ». Agates, pyrites, quartz, jaspe... elles sont autant de fragments de l'univers, d'un monde où rêve et poésie dessinent des analogies avec le monde végétal et animal mais aussi avec celui des hommes.

Après avoir perdu sa vaste collection d'insectes dans l'incendie de Chicago en 1871, le jeune Edward W. Nelson se tourne vers l'ornithologie puis est envoyé en Alaska par l'armée pour y étudier la flore, la faune et le peuplement, dont il rapporte des études éthologiques et ethnologiques. Après une expédition dans la vallée de la Mort où il observe de près oiseaux et mammifères, il s'installe au Mexique pendant quatorze ans tout en travaillant pour le Bureau of Biological Survey. Ses vastes recherches et son nom sont désormais associés à un mouflon canadien (Ovis candensis nelsoni), un passereau bruant (Ammodramus nelsoni), un serpent laitier (Lampropeltis triangulum nelsoni), dix rongeurs, trois lézards et une tortue. Quant aux illustrations de ces « études intimes de créatures petites et grandes », éditées par la prestigieuse National Geographical Society, elles sont signées du peintre et ornithologue Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927) et du naturaliste et artiste animalier Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946).
